Haemorrhoid Centre is a specialist clinic offering non-surgical electrotherapy for internal and prolapsed piles, carried out by a consultant colorectal surgeon. There is no general anaesthetic, no cutting and no stitching, and most patients return to their normal day straight afterwards. This guide explains how to make the most of your visit, from booking through to aftercare, so you know exactly what to expect at each step.
You can book online or contact us to arrange an appointment. New patients usually start with a consultation, which includes a full assessment and a proctoscopy. If you prefer to deal with the problem in a single visit, you can book a combined consultation and treatment appointment, where suitable internal haemorrhoids can be treated on the same day. If you are unsure how severe your symptoms are, our online questionnaire can help you decide which appointment is right for you.
Little preparation is needed. Arrive well hydrated, bring a list of any medications you take, and note down when your symptoms started, what makes them better or worse, and any bleeding, lumps or anal pressure you have noticed. Understanding the different haemorrhoid types beforehand can help you describe your symptoms clearly, but you do not need to diagnose yourself, that is what the assessment is for.
At your appointment the surgeon takes a full history and carries out a proctoscopy, a quick examination that allows the inside of the anal canal and lower rectum to be seen directly. This confirms the diagnosis, grades your haemorrhoids and rules out other causes of your symptoms. The surgeon then explains clearly what they have found, what the treatment does and does not do, and what to expect, so you can make an informed decision before anything goes ahead.
If electrotherapy is appropriate and you choose to proceed, the surgeon applies a precise low-level electrical current to the base of each internal haemorrhoid during the proctoscopy. This disrupts the blood supply so the haemorrhoid shrinks over the following weeks. Up to three internal haemorrhoids can usually be treated in a single session. The treatment needs no anaesthetic, and because nothing is cut or stitched, recovery is far quicker than with surgery.
Most patients return to normal activities the same day. You may notice mild discomfort or minor bleeding for a short time, which is normal. The clinic gives you clear aftercare guidance covering fibre, fluids and gentle hygiene, and there are no complicated dressings or downtime to manage. If you have specific concerns, for example about cycling and piles or returning to exercise, ask the surgeon for tailored advice at your appointment.
Because haemorrhoids vary, some people benefit from a follow-up visit. A follow-up appointment includes a brief progress review, a repeat proctoscopy and a further electrotherapy session for any remaining or newly identified internal haemorrhoids. The surgeon will advise whether a follow-up is likely to help in your case and when to book it. Treating any remaining haemorrhoids promptly gives the best long-term result.
No treatment can guarantee haemorrhoids will never come back, but good habits make recurrence much less likely. A high-fibre diet, plenty of fluids, regular gentle exercise, avoiding straining and not sitting on the toilet for long periods all help. Our general haemorrhoid advice covers prevention in more detail, and the surgeon can give you personalised guidance based on what caused your piles in the first place.
If you have questions about your symptoms, your appointment or your aftercare, you can reach the clinic through our contact page.
