Electrotherapy explained

How does it work?

The treatment is simple and has been clinically researched for over 150 years; advances in medical technology now make it a mainstream practice.

The treatment

This treatment is for internal haemorrhoids only, including those that prolapse. Our doctors will identify and gently rest a probe on the base of the internal haemorrhoid(s) present. There is no cutting, stitching or heat applied, and no anaesthetic is required, which are some of the main reasons our piles treatment is considered low risk.

How it works

The device generates a small current of up to 16mAmp. Some patients experience discomfort during treatment. The current stimulates a chemical reaction in the haemorrhoid, creating an excess of alkali that accumulates over time to seal off the feeding blood vessel.

What to expect

The haemorrhoid is starved of its blood supply and shrinks accordingly. It may take more than one treatment for the blood vessels to be fully sealed and the haemorrhoid to shrink fully. The average number of treatments varies between 1 and 3; we recommend factoring in at least 2 treatments when planning your care.

After treatment

The effect continues to work over the following 4 weeks. Our aftercare team will be in touch at that point to discuss symptom changes and whether any further treatments are required.

External haemorrhoids

External haemorrhoids, as the name suggests, are located outside the anus or on the anus itself. They are often pink or skin-coloured, soft and may be painless, much like anal skin tags. Sometimes they can become swollen, itchy or irritated. In some cases a blood clot forms inside the haemorrhoid (thrombosed external haemorrhoid), which can be very painful.

A lot of people are quite self-conscious of them as they are unsightly and affect hygiene. While many people try over-the-counter solutions like piles cream or haemorrhoids cream, eXroid electrotherapy is not effective in treating true external haemorrhoids.

External haemorrhoids are often confused with large internal haemorrhoids that protrude or prolapse through the anus, known as prolapsed haemorrhoids, which can be treated effectively with eXroid electrotherapy. We will be able to make this diagnosis during a proctoscopy examination when we assess patients, and advise them on the best piles treatment plan.

Advanced Electrotherapy Treatment

Our electrotherapy treatment uses advanced medical technology to provide long-term relief from internal haemorrhoids without surgery. This minimally invasive procedure is performed in our modern clinic by experienced specialists.

The treatment works by applying controlled electrical energy to the affected area, causing the haemorrhoid tissue to shrink. No general anaesthesia is required; some patients may experience discomfort during treatment.

Many patients can return to their normal activities the same day. The procedure is suitable for internal haemorrhoids across different grades and has a success rate of over 80%.
